Genre: Teen romance/Realistic Fiction
Series: Dash and Lily
“I’ve always resented Hermione, because I wanted to be her so badly and she never seemed to appreciate as much as I thought she should that she got be her. She got to live at Hogwarts and be friends with Harry and kiss Ron, which was supposed to happen to me.”
The short story:
Lily loves Christmas, it’s the best time of the year for her. This year she has to celebrate alone because her parents left Lily and her brother home while they went on a second honeymoon. To help pass the time, in her favorite favorite used book store she puts a notebook with a set of clues in it that lead back to her. Dash hates Christmas. He things everything about it is cliche and stupid. He too is spending the holiday alone because his parents are divorced and he told his mom he was staying at his Dad’s while she went on vacation, but then stayed home. He finds the notebook hiding in his favorite used book store and the story ensues following the dares and correspondence left in the notebook between the two, and how it affects their changing teenage lives.
I read this at Christmas and loved it. It has humor, and I really liked the characters. They seemed very real to me, and even though they were opposites they learned from each other and paired nicely together. It was a a romance but it wasn’t sickenly sweet and unrealistic with a lot of drama. There is a second book that just came out called the Twelve Days of Dash & Lily that I’m excited to read, but I think I’m going to force myself to wait until Christmas again.
